Mural presented with ArtBridge at NYC Health + Hospitals
Adinkrahene highlights the East River Side Housing Community through original adinkra symbol drawings from students collected after a series of workshops that Mohr instructed there. My curated collection of their symbols is featured across the face of the mural.
This work was originally inspired by his ancestry research beginning from a trip to his recent ancestor’s homeland of Grenada in Spring of 2022. This mural includes a design inspired by the Grenadian flag, with a reimagined crest of Grenada that he designed in its center, originally presented at my solo show, Blood is Thicker than the Water that Separated U.S. at Lewis Latimer House Museum in 2022. Dario later discovered through an African Ancestry DNA test that he is of Akan ancestry, which is the umbrella tribal group which includes the Asante people, who invented the Adinkra symbol system. Dario is proud to represent a piece of the Caribbean and West Africa here at NYC Health + Hospitals. Check out the piece in person at 2nd Ave and 99th st!
This mural depicts pieces from Mohr’s 2023 series, “Trophies of War, Kingdom of Light” on checkered squares alluding to their roles as a chess kingdom, ahead of the second presentation of the series at ArtCrawl Harlem on Governors Island, Fall, 2024. This mural was presented with ArtBridge at NYC Health + Hospitals
