A trophy has historically served a more grim purpose than conventionally used today. Human remains, looted objects and even live captives served as the trophies of antiquity, denoting victory. This trophy would often be shown to their authorities for prestige and in some cases, a greater reward.
Combat on the international stage, can often result a figure in society being reduced to a potential win. Civilians serve as a buffer of protection for the more important players. Royalty are bookended by religious leaders, military leadership and their fortress. All are for the taking in the game of imperialism and subjugation. Each player when taken out of the game are often held prisoner on the opponents side, on display behind the board in plain view of the loser to diminish moral. Each player, a trophy for the taking.
This installation combines four series beginning with the eight piece series “Trophies of War: Kingdom of Light”, the sixteen piece series “On the Frontlines” (both of which created and presented at Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts during his EFA SHIFT residency in 2023) and the eight piece series, “Atrophy: Kingdom of Luster” (created during his residency at LMCC and presented at the AIM Biennial exhibit at the Bronx Museum in 2024 following his Artist in the Market Place Fellowship). In 2024, Mohr unveiled the mural: “Playing Field” as an ArtBridge Fellow, which is currently on display at NYC Health and Hospitals. These thirty two works are combined to form “Don’t Forget to CHECK!”. Each piece sits on a breeze block forming a fragmented checkered pattern on the floor showcasing a face off between enemy kingdoms in a Machiavellian game of strategy and greed.
